Fourth of July
Nearly 250 years ago, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, birthing the United States of America, a nation founded with the belief that all men are created equal, with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Like Market Connections, our founding fathers believed gathering data was a crucial tool for measuring progress. In 1790, not long after the birth of our nation, the first census of the whole United States was taken.
Here are some fun facts from that first census:
- Census Bureau Director: Thomas Jefferson
- Number of questions asked: 6
- Total number of states: 13
- Total population: 3.9 million
Year over year, the Census Bureau also shares data around holidays. To celebrate the founding of our nation, Market Connections would love to share some fun facts surrounding Fourth of July festivities, gathered from the 2019 fun facts from the Census Bureau (gathered in 2018):
- The nation’s estimated population: 327 million
- Value of fireworks imported into the US: $332 million
- Value of imports of US flags into the US: $6.3 million
- Value of US flags exported out of US: $20.8 million
In addition, some other fun facts we found, thanks to data gathered by WalletHub.com include:
- One-quarter (26%) of Americans will purchase patriotic merchandise for the 4th of July
- Nearly two-thirds (61%) will attend a 4th of July picnic
- 150 million hot dogs are consumed each 4th of July
- Four in ten Americans will attend a 4th of July fireworks display
- More than 47 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more for the 4th of July
Whatever your activities may include, we, at Market Connections hope you have a fun and safe Independence Day with family and friends!
